"There are two different justices in this land. One for the rich, one for the poor. If you have enough money you can buy your way out of anything."
A direct quote from a highly respected attorney, North Carolina State Senator, law maker. Circa 1978.
As evidenced by O.J. Simpson

" What's A Thousand Lawyer-Politicians At The Bottom Of The Sea?

"There are four types of matter known to man; Matter, Anti-Matter, Dark Matter, and You So Dumb It Don't Matter, Matter.

Welcome to W.A.Flowers Folk Art Pottery, A unique source of one of a kind clay artwork. Delightful to own, amazing to view!
The art up for view on this site is already sold however you can order your own variation of one of these or a completely new piece from your own imagination. We enjoy special orders from collectors and each piece can be individually marked as you wish. All are one of a kind collectables and a damn good inestment!

William A. Flowers began making face jugs in the early 1980's after seeing a few of the jugs by Lanier Meaders and Burlon Craig. This was after years of making functional pottery and trying a variety of glazes. The face jugs were just the creative outlet that Bill was looking for. He excitedly created a good dozen, large jugs with fantastic faces. These sold immediately (All we have of the first dozen jugs is a photo) and Bill's interest only grew.    Bill began adjusting his glazes until he has created a dependable alkaline wood ash glaze in the traditional Southern Folk Pottery style. It still varies with each mixed batch and firing. Also his facial styles change with new ideas and inspiration.

Creating those first face jugs has lead to a growing list of folk art jugs, standing figures and animals, wall-hanging faces and animals, portrait busts and grotesque portrayals of literary and mythological beasts and characters. Each face jug, figure, or animal coming from the Flowers Family Pottery is one of a kind and individually made. Sometimes "Brother Pieces" made the same day have a recognizable similarity. We can "copy" jugs or create a series but due to the life of the wet clay and the nature of the glaze, no two jugs will ever be identical.

The folk art pottery pieces viewed on our pages are examples: some are for sale as shown and still available, some are already sold but similar pieces are available. We also create special order works as requested by collectors. These may be caricature portraits of an individual or a special animal or an idea from your imagination that we will create especially for you. Some of the works shown are of special order pieces. Any information can be inscribed in the wet clay while we are working on a piece. Please email for discussion of a personalized piece to order.

Folk Art Face Jugs and Figures are created as miniatures, approx. gallons, and larger, reaching 30 inches. (Bill's pottery continues to grow in size and difficulty. He enjoys new challenges.) They are priced by size and amount of detail (work) involved. Jugs can be made with single, double, triple or multitude faces.

We enjoy answering questions, sharing ideas and info, and hearing of early jugs that have traveled. Please email anytime. Thanks for viewing our page.
